Karma: What It Is and What It Isn't

This weekend teaching will examine the traditional teachings on karma as presented by Vasubandhu in his Treasury of Abhidharma and examine the implications this has on our lives, conduct, and practice. Particular attention will be given to topics that are not easy for Westerners to understand or accept, including the nature of death and rebirth.

Afflictions and Emotions
November 5 - 7 Friday, Saturday, Sunday

One area of confusion that many Western students experience is the difference between afflictions (kleshas) and emotions. This program will explain the differences between the two and explore the afflictions in depth: what they are, how they operate, different ways they are experienced, and how we can deal with them through our practice, based on teachings in Vasubandhu's Treasury of Abhidharma.

Attention will also be given to emotions that are not afflictions, such as fear and guilt. Taken together, the two weekends will give a thorough explanation of the second of the four noble truths, the truth of the origin of suffering.

David Karma Choephel has served as Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche’s main English translator since 2005. He spent four years studying traditional philosophy at the Vajra Vidya Institute, Thrangu Rinpoche’s monastic college. He has also translated for the Gyalwang Karmapa and the Kagyu Monlam. He has translated several written works, including the recently published Ngondro for Our Current Day by the Gyalwang Karmpa and The Heart of the Dharma by Khenchen Thrangu Ronpoche.
